Email outreach guidelines

If you distribute your app using the Sign in with Setapp flow, we want to help you stay compliant with email regulations such as CAN-SPAM (U.S.), GDPR (EU), and CASL (Canada). In this guide, we’ve outlined clear and simple guidelines for emailing Setapp users.

Onboarding emails

You can send onboarding emails without explicit user consent if certain conditions are met:

  1. These emails must be transactional — they should help the user start using your app (for example, welcome messages, setup tips, or getting started guides).
  2. You must do both of the following:
  • Include a note in your Terms of Service stating that users will receive onboarding emails.
  • Inform users during the sign-in flow that by clicking Sign in with Setapp, they accept your Terms of Service.

Marketing emails

You may NOT send marketing emails without the user’s explicit consent. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Promotional offers
  • Feature announcements
  • Newsletters
  • Upsell/cross-sell messages

To be compliant, you must:

  1. Ask for consent via an opt-in checkbox or similar.
  2. Store proof that the user agreed.

You can collect this consent during sign-in or later inside your app, but it’s your responsibility to manage it properly.

⚠️ Sending marketing emails without consent can break the law in many countries.
